Modelling of the migration of tidal channels

With the advancement in the field of numerical models, the predictions of morphological developments in the tidal flats of the North Sea by the application of process based models are in our reach. In this study the predictive capability of a depth-averaged morphodynamic model in capturing the migration of a tidal channel on the German North Sea over a period of 10 years has been investigated.

Alternative measures for the improvement of the harbour entry conditions of Friedrichskoog, North Sea

The motivation for the investigation is the sedimentation of the entry to the harbour Friedrichskoog, North Sea, which is an unfavourable development for shipping and drainage of the hinterland. The investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of several constructive measures to improve the waterway situation by reducing sedimentation tendencies in the harbour entry and maintaining the inland drainage. To this end a morphodynamic model (Delft-3D) was developed and subsequently calibrated and validated with the help of field data.

Comparison of hydrodynamic models of the Baltic Sea (MUSTOK)

The study aims to compare the results of hydrodynamic simulations of a Baltic Sea model developed at FTZ on the base of the Mike-modelling system of the Danish Hydraulic Institute on the one hand with the operational model system of the North and Baltic Sea developed by the German Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrografie (BSH) on the other hand.

Numerical sensitivity studies on the physics of storm tides in the German bight, North Sea

The most relevant processes contributing to significant water level variations at the German North Sea coast are the tides, external surges, generated on the Northeast Atlantic, and surges generated by storms over the North Sea. If these processes occur in adverse combinations their effects might accumulate to scenarios of extremely high water levels. The aim of this study is to provide new insights into the nonlinear interactions between the different processes and to determine adverse process combinations.

Morphodynamic at Kieler Förde

Das Forschungsprojekt verfolgt das Ziel, die Auswirkungen von Strömung und Seegang unter Normal- und Sturmbedingungen auf die Entwicklung einer konzeptionell geplanten Strandaufspülung in der Kieler Innenförde zu simulieren und zu bewerten. Ferner soll geprüft werden, welche potentielle Effekte und Folgen abwandernde Sande einer solchen Strandaufspülung auf die daran angrenzenden Gebiete auftreten.

Development of a coastal monitoring system for the sustainable environmental planning of Jeddah Coastline, Saudi Arabia – Subproject 4 of the Jeddah Transect

The aim of this project is the development and application of a Coastal Monitoring System for the Jeddah Coastal Areas in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah-CMS integrates data from in-situ measurements and operational stations, process based models for simulation of flow, waves and nutrients, and a data base management system and a web-interface for effective dissemination of information.

Influence of the wind drag coefficient in storm surge models

In hydrodynamic simulations the wind drag coefficient represents the effects of the sea surface roughness. It is closely related to the local wave field which is not always fully determined by the local wind. Accurate model-predictions of storm surge water levels along the coast remain difficult, and this is mainly associated with uncertainties regarding the variation of wind drag coefficients at high wind velocities. Wind drag formulations that are only a function of the wind, might therefore lead to inaccurate predictions of surge models.

 

 

Development of an online-controlled housing system for respiratory measurements in fish

The interdisciplinary research project in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für Marine Aquakultur mbH, aims to develop an atmospherically closed fish farming system for online detection of metabolic parameters in order to receive a detailed knowledge of the influence of different environmental conditions on gas exchange and thus on the physiology of fish.

Studies of enzymes in the plankton

One aim within the project is to study more in detail the biodiversity of marine plankton in the North Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic Sea. A further aim is the detailed documentation of the occurrence of the important enzymes hydrogenase and nitrogenase.

Research on photobioreactors for microalgae cultivation

The working group develops a new photobioreactor (PBR). In the PBR microalgae will be cultivated under defined conditions. The aim is to search for optimal/suboptimal cultivation parameters and their influence on physiology and on the production of active substances in microalgae.

Building a microalgae database

Aim of the project is to create a central collection of special microalgae with commercial or bio-scientific potential. The project was created to hold that algae available, to characterise them physiologically, to analyse them quantitatively for active substances and for optimising their cultivation conditions.

North-Sea Monitoring Project

Under the leadership of “Raytheon Anschütz” ten companies of Schleswig-Holstein and scientists of IfM-Geomar and Kiel University developed a monitoring concept for the North Sea. The concept reaches from X-Band- and over horizon radar, some measuring buoys and a measuring pile, over the data analysis up to a locally public alerting system.

Development of measuring units for vessels and buoys to detect water parameters

Aim of the BMBF project about the measuring system for ships of opportunity is the optimisation and qualification of a robust and sea water resistant flow path for ships for the on-line detection of water parameters. The Blue Box contains timely high precision sensors for temperature, conductivity, turbidity, oxygen, fluorescence (Chl.a content), and pH-value.

A system for wind energy storage

More than the half of the world population lives on coasts, often with a deficit of electrical current and freshwater. Higher wind speeds are available at coasts, so that wind turbines have higher electrical current yield. But unsteady wind energy is not storable by the electrical grid itself. Here, a conversion of wind current in hydrogen and freshwater provides redress.

Anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus loads in Paranaguá Bay

In the framework of the joint project 'Development of improved strategies for sustainable environmental management in Brazilian harbours' loads and dispersion of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus compounds in the bay of Paranaguá were investigated. A focus was on anthropogenic inputs deriving from the large scale harbour of Paranaguá.

Fieldmeasurements Kiel Fjord

In 2011 and 2012 hydrological as well as morpho- sedimentological  field work was carried out in the Kiel Fjord area. This study was part of a joint research and development project conducted between the FTZ and the Landesamt für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und ländliche Räume (LLUR).  Objectives were the mapping and characterisation of the shallow water sediments at the western shoreline along the "Kiellinie" (former "Hindenburgufer") as well a the measurement of currents , waves, salinity, and temperature in the water body of the inner and outer Kiel Fjord.
