As a contribution to North Sea monitoring activities, the FTZ performs operational measurements of various water quality parameters at the permanent station Buesum Mole.

Decision support system for the sustainable coastal development of the Shandong Peninsula, China

The project aims at the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the sustainable environmental development of the northern coast of the Shandong peninsula, China. The system shall provide a sound scientific support to coastal scientists and public institutions with coastal management issues.

Ocean renewable energy in the Indonesian Seas

About 80% of the global energy consumption is supplied by fossil fuels. In the face of the climate change, sea level rise and the depletion of oil resources much effort is done to use ocean renewable energy. The National Energy Council (NEC) of Indonesia intends to strengthen the role of ocean renewable energy in the national energy mix and supports investigations on the potentials of wave and tidal current energy.

STopP - from sediment to top-predator - influence of sea floor properties on benthos and benthivorous birds

 

The joint research project "STopP“  is one of five projects that are funded in the framework of the call “Coastal Sea Research in the North and Baltic Sea.”  The call is part the program FONA (Forschung für nachhaltige Entwicklung”  of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.)  STopP is coordinated by the national park administration of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Identification of marine natural habitat types in the Wadden Sea of Schleswig-Holstein according to FFH

The Habitats Directive (FFH) of the European Union (EU) describes for coastal seafloors that are permanently covered by water (subtidal) three so called marine natural habitat types. These compartments have to be monitored and evaluated, and their status has to be reported every six years to the EU by the responsible authority.  The relevant habitat types are "subtidal sandbanks", "large shallow inlets and bays", and "reefs". In the scope of the implementation of the Habitats Directive mandatory definitions and mapping instructions have been recommended that mainly base on the geological setting of the site.

With regard to the long-term stability of the Wadden Sea the question whether the elevation growth of the tidal flats is able to follow sea level rise is of particular importance. Against this background, measurements of the relative heights of tidal flats are carried out since 2008 in collaboration with the NATUUR CENTRUM AMELAND (Netherlands).

FTZ carried out several projects to investigate the variability of temperature in tidal flat sediments above pipelines and cables. Besides the long term measurement of soil temperature in a depth of 30 cm this also involves the registration and evaluation of possible effects of soil heating on sediments and living environment.

Changes of the operation of the Ems storm surge barrier to reduce the concentrations of suspended matter and dredging volumes

In the course of the project a three dimensional model of the Ems estuary is developed. It is used to simulate the hydro-morphological effects of different scenarios in which the Ems storm surge barrier is used for controlling tidal dynamics to reduce the import of sediment into the lower Ems river. The effects on suspended sediment transport and sedimentation volumes are assed.

Hydromorphological investigations of different approaches to improve the ecological state of the lower Ems river

IIn this project four alternative solutions are analyzed with respect to their potential to sustainably reduce the sediment import into the river Ems and to improve the water quality in the lower river. A three dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model is applied to conduct hydromorphological simulations. The results are used in conjunction with an verified set of indicators to evaluate the proposed solutions against the actual situation.

Nowcasting and Forecasting System for the Management of Fish Farms in the Red Sea

In this project a web-based Coastal Information System for the management of coastal areas along the Saudi Arabian Red Sea is assessed in its effectiveness to deliver data for the management of fish farms. The system runs in real time and delivers water levels, current velocities and waves with high spatial and temporal resolution.

Capacity Building in Coastal Cage Aquaculture

This project deals with the development of capacity building programs for experts in the field of aquaculture. The TRAIN-X methodology, used by the Train-Sea –Coast Programme and by various other training programmes in the United Nations is adopted.

Sysmar Dimensional Analysis of Carrying Capacity

In this project a simple and generally applicable relationship for estimating production levels for finfish mariculture has been developed. The resulting equation is to be integrated within the DSS SYSMAR and used in conjunction with numerical model simulations for estimation of the environmental carrying capacity of floating net cages.

Spatial planning of coastal and offshore cage aquaculture on the Shandong Peninsula, China

This project focuses on the continuing development and application of an existing decision support system (SYSMAR) for the management of cage aquaculture on the Shandong Peninsula in China. Preliminary results of the application of the system for supporting the development of a coastal management planning are presented.

Modelling the Dispersion of Pollutants in Relation to Microalgae Blooms and Fish Contamination in Jakarta Bay

Jakarta Bay is exposed to a high load of pollutants mainly deriving from land-based activities in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA).

The primary goal of the project is to study the transport and dispersion of anthropogenic nutrients (N, P) from the JMA using a combination of field measurements and numerical modelling.

Monitoring of marine top predators in the North and Baltic Seas (TopMarine)

Seabirds and marine mammals are apex predators and as such they constitute an important component of marine ecosystems. The monitoring and assessment of their population status and precise information on their distribution, population trends, and ecological preferences are fundamental prerequisites for effective conservation measures and fact-based management of protected areas. In addition, data from this monitoring programme are used as indicators for the assessment of the environmental status.

Digital census methods (PhoViComp)

In this project, the FTZ compares digital aerial video-based and photo-based strip-transect methods. With both types of methods, synoptic censuses of seabirds and marine mammals are possible. The comparison of the methods is carried out in dedicated study areas in the German parts of North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Bird migration over the open sea (BIRDMOVE)

Which consequences have offshore wind farms on migratory birds and seabirds in German waters? In this project, state of the art telemetry systems are applied to record movement patterns of individual birds over medium to long periods and assess possible risks.

Modelling of the migration of tidal channels

With the advancement in the field of numerical models, the predictions of morphological developments in the tidal flats of the North Sea by the application of process based models are in our reach. In this study the predictive capability of a depth-averaged morphodynamic model in capturing the migration of a tidal channel on the German North Sea over a period of 10 years has been investigated.

Alternative measures for the improvement of the harbour entry conditions of Friedrichskoog, North Sea

The motivation for the investigation is the sedimentation of the entry to the harbour Friedrichskoog, North Sea, which is an unfavourable development for shipping and drainage of the hinterland. The investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of several constructive measures to improve the waterway situation by reducing sedimentation tendencies in the harbour entry and maintaining the inland drainage. To this end a morphodynamic model (Delft-3D) was developed and subsequently calibrated and validated with the help of field data.

Comparison of hydrodynamic models of the Baltic Sea (MUSTOK)

The study aims to compare the results of hydrodynamic simulations of a Baltic Sea model developed at FTZ on the base of the Mike-modelling system of the Danish Hydraulic Institute on the one hand with the operational model system of the North and Baltic Sea developed by the German Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrografie (BSH) on the other hand.

Numerical sensitivity studies on the physics of storm tides in the German bight, North Sea

The most relevant processes contributing to significant water level variations at the German North Sea coast are the tides, external surges, generated on the Northeast Atlantic, and surges generated by storms over the North Sea. If these processes occur in adverse combinations their effects might accumulate to scenarios of extremely high water levels. The aim of this study is to provide new insights into the nonlinear interactions between the different processes and to determine adverse process combinations.

Morphodynamic at Kieler Förde

Das Forschungsprojekt verfolgt das Ziel, die Auswirkungen von Strömung und Seegang unter Normal- und Sturmbedingungen auf die Entwicklung einer konzeptionell geplanten Strandaufspülung in der Kieler Innenförde zu simulieren und zu bewerten. Ferner soll geprüft werden, welche potentielle Effekte und Folgen abwandernde Sande einer solchen Strandaufspülung auf die daran angrenzenden Gebiete auftreten.

Development of a coastal monitoring system for the sustainable environmental planning of Jeddah Coastline, Saudi Arabia – Subproject 4 of the Jeddah Transect

The aim of this project is the development and application of a Coastal Monitoring System for the Jeddah Coastal Areas in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah-CMS integrates data from in-situ measurements and operational stations, process based models for simulation of flow, waves and nutrients, and a data base management system and a web-interface for effective dissemination of information.

Influence of the wind drag coefficient in storm surge models

In hydrodynamic simulations the wind drag coefficient represents the effects of the sea surface roughness. It is closely related to the local wave field which is not always fully determined by the local wind. Accurate model-predictions of storm surge water levels along the coast remain difficult, and this is mainly associated with uncertainties regarding the variation of wind drag coefficients at high wind velocities. Wind drag formulations that are only a function of the wind, might therefore lead to inaccurate predictions of surge models.

 

 

SYSMAR- Mass Balance Model for the Quantification of Cage Fish Farm Wastes

In this project a mass balance models to quantify the waste flux from floating net cage mariculture is developed. The model calculates fish growth and the fraction of carbon or nitrogen dedicated to the different pathways of growth, excretion, faecal discard and to feed wastage.

Development of an online-controlled housing system for respiratory measurements in fish

The interdisciplinary research project in cooperation with the Gesellschaft für Marine Aquakultur mbH, aims to develop an atmospherically closed fish farming system for online detection of metabolic parameters in order to receive a detailed knowledge of the influence of different environmental conditions on gas exchange and thus on the physiology of fish.

Studies of enzymes in the plankton

One aim within the project is to study more in detail the biodiversity of marine plankton in the North Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic Sea. A further aim is the detailed documentation of the occurrence of the important enzymes hydrogenase and nitrogenase.

Research on photobioreactors for microalgae cultivation

The working group develops a new photobioreactor (PBR). In the PBR microalgae will be cultivated under defined conditions. The aim is to search for optimal/suboptimal cultivation parameters and their influence on physiology and on the production of active substances in microalgae.

Building a microalgae database

Aim of the project is to create a central collection of special microalgae with commercial or bio-scientific potential. The project was created to hold that algae available, to characterise them physiologically, to analyse them quantitatively for active substances and for optimising their cultivation conditions.

North-Sea Monitoring Project

Under the leadership of “Raytheon Anschütz” ten companies of Schleswig-Holstein and scientists of IfM-Geomar and Kiel University developed a monitoring concept for the North Sea. The concept reaches from X-Band- and over horizon radar, some measuring buoys and a measuring pile, over the data analysis up to a locally public alerting system.

Development of measuring units for vessels and buoys to detect water parameters

Aim of the BMBF project about the measuring system for ships of opportunity is the optimisation and qualification of a robust and sea water resistant flow path for ships for the on-line detection of water parameters. The Blue Box contains timely high precision sensors for temperature, conductivity, turbidity, oxygen, fluorescence (Chl.a content), and pH-value.

A system for wind energy storage

More than the half of the world population lives on coasts, often with a deficit of electrical current and freshwater. Higher wind speeds are available at coasts, so that wind turbines have higher electrical current yield. But unsteady wind energy is not storable by the electrical grid itself. Here, a conversion of wind current in hydrogen and freshwater provides redress.

In the framework of the joint project 'Development of improved strategies for sustainable environmental management in Brazilian harbours' loads and dispersion of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus compounds in the bay of Paranaguá were investigated. A focus was on anthropogenic inputs deriving from the large scale harbour of Paranaguá.

Fieldmeasurements Kiel Fjord

In 2011 and 2012 hydrological as well as morpho- sedimentological  field work was carried out in the Kiel Fjord area. This study was part of a joint research and development project conducted between the FTZ and the Landesamt für Landwirtschaft, Umwelt und ländliche Räume (LLUR).  Objectives were the mapping and characterisation of the shallow water sediments at the western shoreline along the "Kiellinie" (former "Hindenburgufer") as well a the measurement of currents , waves, salinity, and temperature in the water body of the inner and outer Kiel Fjord.
