Research and development are focussed on numerical modelling of water levels, currents, waves, sediment transport, morphology and water quality. The objective is to analyse physical processes on ocean- coastal- and estuarine scale and to assess their impact on coastal evolution on variable time scales.

Modelling techniques, driving forces, simulations of extreme events and response of coastal systems as well as expectable effects of climate change and sea level rise are further research areas. The work results in concepts and strategies for sustainable coastal management. Coastal information systems are being developed to provide scientific support for the assessment of complex issues related to coastal protection, harbour and estuarine planning, environmental problems and renewable ocean energy.
